Prof. L. Kurilo studies chronology and dynamics of mammalian and human gametogenesis, morphology and genetics of germ cells development in oogenesis and spermatogenesis in the prenatal and postnatal periods.
She studies the role of chromosomal and gene mutations in the development of infertility and reproductive system disorders in patients of different age groups, male and female.
Prof. L. Kurilo investigates the frequency of chromosome non-disjunction in human sperm cells in individuals with a normal male karyotype and with various chromosome abnormalities/genetic disorders.
She worked out main principles of evaluation and criteria for quantitative testing of the gameto- and gonadotoxic effects of nicotine, radiation, and some chemical compounds on male and female fertility in vivo and in vitro.
A technique for quantitative karyological analysis of immature germ cells from ejaculate sediment (license # 2328736), and a quantitative method for evaluating the generative ovarial potency in mammals (license # 2367949), have been developed and patented by Prof. L. Kurilo.
Prof. L. Kurilo deals with the bioethical aspects of human reproduction and biomedical technologies. She was an expert of the Embryo and Human Fetal Protection Working Group (CDBI-CO-GT3) of Steering Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe from 1998 to 2003. She is a co-author of the Law of the Russian Federation “On the Temporary Prohibition of Human Cloning” which come into force in 2002, and was extended indefinitely in 2011.
Prof. L. Kurilo is a member of Russian Society of Medical Genetics (RSMG), member of the Academy of Natural Sciences.
She is the author and co-author of more than 500 publications;
28 PhD and doctoral thesis have been defended under her supervising.
